Agricultural Technology Adoption Initiative

ATAI is a university-led research institution co-managed by the Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA). ATAI’s research focuses on improving the ability of poor farmers to benefit from agricultural technology by seeking ways to overcome the constraints they face.

Researchers in our network collaborate with NGOs and other organizations to design randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effectiveness of different interventions to increase technology uptake. Each ATAI evaluation addresses at least one of seven market inefficiencies that make agricultural technology adoption less profitable:

  • externalities
  • input and output market
  • labour market inefficiencies
  • land market inefficiencies
  • credit constraints
  • risk market inefficiencies
  • information inefficiencies.
